Mauritius has been an independent member of the Commonwealth since 1968, and became a republic in 1992. The mostly volcanic land area of 1,860 sq km lies east of Madagascar and has a population of 1,275,000. The climate is sub-tropical; average daily temperature ranges from 17 to 30 degrees Celsius; it can be wet. The time zone is 4 hours (during winter) or 5 hours (during summer) ahead of GMT.
The official language of Mauritius is English, although French and Creole is widely spoken. The Government consists of a President, with a single elected National Assembly and a Council of Ministers headed by a Prime Minister. The legal system is hybrid reflecting both French and British ancestry.
Tourism has become a major contributor to the economy. The airport has good connections with a wide range of countries. GDP per head of $13,500 (2006 est.) is in a middle range but growth has mostly been around 5% (4.3%- 2006 est.) and unemployment at 8.8% (2007 estimate).
Mauritius has quite fertile soil and the sugar cane is the dominant crop for agriculture and sugar accounts for one third of total exports. Apart from promoting tourism, the Government created a manufacturing sector with a range of investment incentives, free trade zones and a freeport. Garment manufacture has been a particular success. The financial services sector has expanded under the Government’s many efforts, providing many benefits to the investors including the many unique tax treaties Mauritius signed with other countries including India, a few African countries and China. The Government is also providing incentives to build state of the art infrastructures to promote e-commerce and business outsourcing, transforming Mauritius into a cyber island.
