Mauritius ranks top in Africa in good governance
The 2011 Ibrahim Index of African Governance, released on the fifth anniversary of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, ranked Mauritius first out of 53 African countries. Mauritius scored 82.5 points out of 100 for its quality of global governance compared to 81.78 last year.

The index illustrates that countries that pursue a balanced approach to all dimensions of governance achieve the most success.

Jane Valls, chief executive of Mauritius Institute of Directors (MIOD) said, “I am delighted to hear that once again Mauritius came top in Mo Ibrahim Index 2011.

Mauritius has made progress in corporate governance since it was launched and will work towards maintaining the position they have achieved. We would now welcome an upgrade of the code in line with international best practice.”

Over the last five years, countries like Mauritius, Cape Verde, Botswana, Seychelles and South Africa have consistently ranked in the top five for overall governance and have performed well in all four categories. These are Safety and Rule of Law, Participation and Human Rights, Sustainable Economic Opportunity and Human Development.

Established in 2007, the Ibrahim Index is the most comprehensive collection of quantitative data that provides an annual assessment of governance performance in every African country.

The index is funded and led by an African institution. As Africa‘s leading assessment of governance, the index provides a framework and tools for citizens, public authorities and partners to assess progress in governance.

It compiles 86 indicators grouped into 14 sub-categories and four overarching categories to measure the effective delivery of public goods and services to African citizens.
